MFA Methods: Strongest to Weakest
Physical keys (YubiKey, Google Titan) that require a physical tap. Phishing-resistant — they will not authenticate on a fake website. Best for admin accounts and sensitive roles.
Time-based one-time passwords from apps (Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, Authy). Better than SMS but still phishable — an attacker can trick you into entering the code on a fake site.
Apps like Duo send a push to your phone. Convenient, but vulnerable to "MFA fatigue" attacks — attackers spam push requests until the user accepts one.
SMS-based MFA is vulnerable to SIM-swap attacks and interception. Use only if no other option is available. Better than no MFA, but not by much.

If your business uses Microsoft 365, Microsoft Authenticator is the natural choice — it integrates natively with Azure AD and supports passwordless sign-in (approve a number shown on screen). It is free, supports TOTP codes for non-Microsoft services, and backs up to your Microsoft account. For M365 shops that do not need a dedicated MFA management platform, Microsoft Authenticator + Windows Hello for Business covers the majority of MFA needs at zero additional cost.
4. Google Titan Key — Google's Hardware Key
Google's answer to YubiKey. Supports FIDO2/U2F and works seamlessly with Google Workspace and Google's Advanced Protection Program. At $30-35, it is slightly cheaper than YubiKey 5 but supports fewer protocols (no OTP, smart card, or OpenPGP). If your business runs on Google Workspace, Titan Keys are a solid, cost-effective choice. For mixed environments, YubiKey's broader protocol support is worth the extra $20.
5. Authy — Best Free TOTP App with Backup
Authy (by Twilio) is a free TOTP authenticator app with one killer feature: encrypted cloud backup. If you lose your phone, you can restore all your 2FA tokens — unlike Google Authenticator which traditionally lost everything. Authy syncs across multiple devices and is protected by a backup password. It is not as secure as a hardware key, but for general-use MFA across dozens of services, Authy's backup capability prevents the nightmare of being locked out of everything because you dropped your phone.
