Our mission: Close the gap between the cybersecurity advice written for Fortune 500 companies and what a five-person business actually needs. No jargon, no enterprise tools you cannot afford — just practical, actionable guidance that works in the real world.

Why This Site Exists

Walk into any small business — a law firm, a dental practice, a marketing agency, a local retailer — and ask about their cybersecurity. Most owners will tell you they know it is important, but they do not know where to start. The guides online are either too technical ("deploy a SIEM with SOAR integration") or too vague ("be careful online"). Neither helps.

We built Small Biz Security to be the resource we wish existed when our friends and family — small business owners themselves — asked us for help. Every guide answers the question: "What do I actually do, and in what order?" Every tool is designed for someone who has a business to run and does not have time to become a security expert.

What We Offer

  • Honest Recommendations: We focus on free and affordable tools we have actually tested. No sponsored placements. No affiliate links that skew our judgment. If we recommend something, it is because we have used it and it works.

Our Editorial Standards

Every article and tool on this site is created with these principles:

  • Test everything. We do not recommend a tool we have not set up and used ourselves.
  • Cite your sources. Statistics reference their origin — usually Verizon DBIR, FBI IC3, or peer-reviewed research.
  • Write for a real person. Before publishing, we ask: would a busy small business owner understand this and know what to do next?
  • Stay current. Articles are reviewed and updated regularly. The threat landscape changes fast, and advice from 2023 may not hold in 2026.
  • No fear-mongering. Cybersecurity is serious, but we will not use scare tactics to make a point. The goal is to empower, not to frighten.

How We Keep the Lights On

Small Biz Security is free and always will be. We do not sell anything. There are no premium tiers, no paid courses, no "exclusive content" behind a paywall.

Our operating costs (hosting, domain, the coffee that fuels late-night editing sessions) are covered by advertising through Google AdSense. This means the content stays free for you, and we stay independent. Advertisers have zero influence over what we write or recommend.

I have spent years working in cybersecurity and IT operations, helping businesses of all sizes — from two-person startups to multinational corporations — build practical security programs that actually work.

What I noticed over and over: the advice available to small business owners was either written for enterprises with dedicated security teams, or it was so oversimplified that it was useless. There was almost nothing in the middle — the practical, specific, "here is what to do and here is how to do it" guidance that a small business owner can actually act on.

Small Biz Security is my attempt to fill that gap. Every article is written with a specific person in mind: a business owner who is smart, busy, and not a technical expert — but who wants to protect what they have built.

When I am not writing about cybersecurity, I am probably testing a new security tool, reading breach reports to understand what actually happened, or helping a friend set up 2FA on their accounts.
